The Birthday Bean

Well, half-birthday anyway. Today Miss Bean is six months old! We cannot believe how big she is (especially when we see our friend’s newborns!) and how much we love her little personality. Here’s the status report (mostly for posterity’s sake, you aren’t obligated to read this!):

Teething: Um, we think so. However, no proof, even though cousin Isaiah is being a show-off and cut five already! Luca is very fond of chewing on anything within reach. Case in point, tonight as I was folding laundry she sat next to my knee and happily gummed my fraying jeans. We also just got one of those mesh-food-holder-things (what are they called?) and when I drop a couple of ice cubes in it she goes a little ga-ga.

Eating: We are branching out in the food department. Mommy’s yogurt, homemade applesauce (thanks for the recipe Sarah!), sweet potatoes, grapefruit and blueberries are a hit. The avocado, squash and pears haven’t gotten a verdict yet. Peas and green beans are definite NOs. She is learning to drink from a cup, (this isn’t something I planned on but she made it quite clear that she WAS going to drink out of Mommy’s water glass so she IS. A video is coming soon to show this hilarious little trick).

Sleeping: aside from getting up four times in one night last week (I think she caught my cold) she is a very good little dreamer. Joe and I love to tiptoe over to her crib each night and stare at her little face. She sleeps like her Daddy, arms overhead or straight out and is, in our opinion, absolutely beautiful. Another “like Daddy” is her morning personality, happy and bright-eyed, it makes me smile even though I am not a morning person.

Vocalizing: Luca is quiet when happy and loud when upset (kind of like her Mommy, actually). I sometimes wish for Isaiah-like giggles but for now we are happy with the occasional squeals and frequent humming. Her little face is so expressive that we can tell that she wants to laugh but right now those little giggles are stuck in her eyes

Moving: Luca thinks that sitting is easy, she only falls over if she’s reaching behind her and lets face it, everyone has a hard time doing that! She loves to stand on her play mat and hold onto the bars that suspend the toys. This is another thing that will have video proof shortly, it’s amazing. I have to be very careful with the Bumbo and the swing now since she can throw herself out of both!

Learning: Just yesterday, our little bean started giving kisses! We lean towards her and ask for kisses while making little smacking noises and she head dives (mouth open) towards our face until she’s mashed up against our chin. Oh how I melt! She and I enjoy storytime every afternoon (yes, I’m sharing my books). She sits on my lap and holds the pages right above my hands and, I must say, has a pretty good attention span.

Growing: We haven’t been to the 6month appointment yet so I don’t know what she weighs but it has to be a lot because there’s no way my arm strength is the issue. Ha. I had to pack away (sadly) another set of clothes and discovered that we are running low on jammies that don’t cramp her toes. Bummer, I guess I have to go shopping!

What an incredible six months!
Happy Half-Birthday Miss Bean!

We love you!
