Sunday Morning the sun was back in full force so we dashed to the north edge of Estes for one last hike before heading home. This particular mountainside was much more arid than the other ones we explored and (yay) almost straight up on the front end of the trail. Joe and I took quite a few "wow, look at that, you really need to stand here and look at that for a minute and maybe even take a picture or two" breaks on the way up but it really was worth it.
Happily, the trail leveled off, we got some wandering in and Luca did some climbing (on her fresh legs) before we began our descent.
Luca was our cacti counter on this hike, she was very concerned about the prickly pear and it's proximity to the trail. I should have gotten video of this because she was hilarious. We heard all sorts of prickly pear descriptions and it seemed like each patch surprised her. Here she is "quick-drawing" on some:
So pretty
Discussing old rock climbing pitons and the crazy (my word, not Joe's) people who scale things like this:
Another trail to check of her list.
Little Bug stretching his legs before getting into the car for the long drive. I also had him climb up a set of "stairs" on the trail several times in a row to try and wear him out. It worked! He was asleep before we hit the foothills.
We had a wonderful time in Estes and are thinking it needs to be an annual trip.

I'm thinking you guys were probably quite justified in whatever vacation food indulgences you allowed yourselves . . . all that hiking and kid-wearing!!! My legs burn a bit just looking at the pictures. ;o)
We'll have to start Luca collecting the trail patches!
